Description
The initiative aims to contribute to the implementation of projects under the ICRC 2024 Special Appeal on "Disability and Mine Action" in three different beneficiary countries, namely Afghanistan, Mali and Somalia, through specialized health care and socio-economic inclusion activities for people with disabilities, especially victims of landmines and other unexploded ordnance. Mali component: In order to improve care and make it more accessible to people with disabilities, including those whose disabilities are conflict-related, the ICRC will maintain its support for orthopedic and physical rehabilitation centers in Mali. It will work with the centers and other local organizations to expand the social inclusion of people with disabilities, particularly through sports and employment. The ICRC will continue to support the efforts of national health authorities to ensure the sustainability of the physical rehabilitation sector. With the 2024 contribution, the ICRC will provide support to five physical rehabilitation centers—two in Bamako and one each in Gao, Mopti, and Timbuktu—to deliver quality services to 1,000 people with disabilities, through: i) providing the centers with prosthetic and orthotic components and rehabilitation equipment; ii) subsidizing treatment and providing assistive devices, as well as covering transportation, food, and accommodation costs for users from remote areas; iii) training activities to enable staff to refine their clinical skills and strengthen the organizational capacities of the centers; iv) supporting the five physical rehabilitation centers and seven other local organizations in organizing sports or other events that promote the rights and social inclusion of people with disabilities; v) providing technical support to the Ministry of Health for the implementation of a national strategy to develop the physical rehabilitation sector and expand the pool of qualified personnel.
