Description

The initiative aims to improve food security in Libya, focusing on the Fezzan region, by enhancing institutional and technical capacities for integrated management of natural resources in the agricultural sector. This will be achieved through several strategic actions. Firstly, updating the digital platform MerWat-Libya for data collection and management will enable efficient monitoring of water resource usage, providing crucial information to optimize irrigation and reduce waste. Strengthening the technical and managerial capacities of local institutions is another fundamental pillar of the initiative. Specific training programs will be organized for the staff of the involved institutions, aiming to improve skills in sustainable management of natural resources. This training will cover technical aspects, such as the use of new irrigation technologies, as well as managerial aspects, such as planning and managing agricultural projects. A key element of the project is the implementation of pilot activities in Ghadwa. These activities aim to develop a model of sustainable agricultural development based on the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus approach. This integrated approach considers the interdependence between water resources, energy, food production, and ecosystems to promote agricultural practices that are environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable. The pilot activities in Ghadwa will be a concrete example of how integrated management of natural resources can lead to increased agricultural productivity and more efficient resource management. This model can be replicated in other areas of Libya, thereby contributing to improved food security at the national level. read more close

SDGs

  • 2.4 - By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality
  • 6.4 - By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity
