Description
The initiative aims to contribute to the eradication of the HIV/TB epidemics in Malawi (General Objective) by maximizing health service equity, gender equality, and human rights in HIV/TB services in the Balaka and Blantyre districts (Specific Objective). To achieve this, the goal is to increase women’s access, particularly that of AGYW and KVPs, to HIV/TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and support services within the target districts (Outcome 1). By engaging community and district authorities, integrated and differentiated prevention services will be brought closer to the community, overcoming socio-cultural and logistical barriers, and increasing the demand for care. By introducing youth days in the three health centers, the engagement of AGYW living with HIV will be promoted, improving treatment adherence and reducing the likelihood of AHD. At the same time, thanks to the academic partner of the project, the capacity for rapid identification of populations at risk of late HIV diagnosis in the Balaka and Blantyre districts will be improved (Outcome 2), through the conduction of epidemiological research on the phenomenon of late diagnoses. The evidence will contribute to improving testing procedures and prevention activities: the evidence, in fact, may indicate the categories most vulnerable to late diagnosis and thus less reached by awareness and prevention services. In this way, it will be possible to target vulnerable groups, particularly women and AGYW, reducing the number of new infections, improving treatment adherence, and strengthening diagnostic services. The training of local health personnel and young peer counselors will improve the quality and responsiveness of HIV/TB services, with specific skills in providing integrated and differentiated services, using a youth-friendly and gender-sensitive approach. The partnership consists of Italian and local partners, with a multi-stakeholder approach. The involvement of public authorities (DHO) and a local NGO (PDT) ensures the implementation of national operational plans, giving voice to and encouraging the involvement of local communities (Top-down and Bottom-up Approach). The collaboration with UNITOV will allow for accurate epidemiological research and will give greater resonance to the generated evidence, both in Malawi and internationally.
