Description
The project main objective is the improvement of the Kassala State's laboratory system, in synergy with existing AICS. interventions, in particular by supporting the development of the new Kassala Health Citadel. The aim is to strengthen the diagnostic capabilities of the laboratories, to improve the surveillance system of pathogenic organisms in order to prevent health emergencies, fight epidemic diseases; and to strengthen the Kassala Central Blood Bank as a reference transfusion centre for the State.. The Kassala State’s laboratory system will be strengthened with materials (furniture, equipment and consumables), better management (protocols and operating procedures) and capacity building (improving technical staff’s knowledge and skills). The role of the blood bank will be strengthened in its organization, management and staff skills to ensure the safety of blood (compatibility and absence of infectious agents), its proper storage and proper transfusion procedures. To improve the communicable disease surveillance system a centre of reference in Kassala will be adequately equipped for the rapid diagnosis of pathogens and for research on epidemiological outbreaks. Special focus will be given to virus, in consideration of the recent COVID-19 pandemic and the previous Arbovirus epidemic of global health concern, like: Dengue, Chikungunya and Rift Valley Fever. A quality control system of the Kassala State Laboratories network will be operationalized and supported. The project provides specific training aimed at laboratory technicians in order to develop technical skills for the detection and analysis of values and factors that contribute to the onset of the most frequent pathologies of the reproductive age and early childhood (for example anemia connected pre and postnatal health).
