The project “Preservation and Promotion of the Bamiyan Valley through Culture-Oriented Sustainable Development” is a three-year initiative aiming at enhancing the capacity of Afghan authorities and communities in managing and protecting, through an integrated approach, the site of the Bamiyan Valley (“the site”), inscribed since 2003 as “Cultural Landscape and Archaeological Remains of the Bamiyan Valley” in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. The Project identifies and considers the site and its assets as a socio-economic, cultural and environmental “unicum”. It combines actions for the safeguard and sustainable development of the site with long-term conservation and promotion interventions, also in view of creating employment opportunities and developing sustainable tourism. The project brings about the following main outcomes: 1. Strengthen national capacities and operational frameworks to preserve and manage the cultural landscape of Bamiyan (a main output of this will be the Management Plan of the site, an essential tool for its sustainable management, which will be formulated and adopted within the first two years of the project); 2. Contribute to community empowerment by creating public cultural spaces, employment opportunities and training related to cultural heritage; 3. Contribute to the valorization of the site. The Project strategy includes actions aiming at strengthening the strong interconnection between sustainable development, conservation management and promotion of cultural heritage by working at different levels: national and policy-making, provincial and local, community and individual. An Archeological and cultural park will be defined and established by the project to safeguard and enhance the unique heritage of the Valley also through socio-economic activities. The project will benefit directly 5.000 people and indirectly 10.000, 40% of whom will be women. The Project with a budget of 4.092.102,00 Euro, will be implemented by UNESCO in cooperation with the Ministry of Information and Culture and its Department in Bamiyan, the University of Bamiyan, the Governorate and the Municipality of Bamiyan. read more close
