Description

Burkina Faso is one of the most vulnerable regions in the world to the effects of hydro-meteorological extreme events, which are becoming more frequent and intense due to climate change. The impacts on people, the economy and infrastructure associated with such events increasingly undermine the country's resilience, not only causing significant socio-economic losses, but also threatening the humanitarian stability of the area. Early warning systems (EWS) can play a key role in this context, enabling preparedness actions that are effective in reducing the impact. The proposed 36-month project has the ambition to strengthen the early warning system in Burkina Faso through technology transfer, training and promotion of inter-institutional and multi-level coordination built with the National Council for Emergency Relief and Recovery (CONASUR). The positive impact that the initiative proposes in the long term is to contribute to an improvement in the reduction of the impacts related to extreme hydro-meteorological events (SDG 11.5), fostering continuity in the socio-economic development of the country. The initiative stems from a dialogue with CONASUR and other local actors involved in disaster risk management, which highlighted the need to increase the effectiveness of the existing warning system, which is currently reduced due to the lack of common, coherent and shared data, tools and methods that enable coordination between the different sectors. The project, led by CIMA Foundation with the local support of WeWorld consist of two sequential components: A. Improvement of tools (methodological and technological) for monitoring, forecasting and alerting and operational linkage with timely actions in the field. B. Enhancement of skills, capacities and equipment for better, timely and shared alert management. read more close

SDGs

  • 11.5 - By 2030, significantly reduce the number of deaths and the number of people affected and substantially decrease the direct economic losses relative to global gross domestic product caused by disasters, including water-related disasters, with a focus on protecting the poor and people in vulnerable situations
  • 13.1 - Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
  • 13.3 - Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
  • 1.5 - By 2030, build the resilience of the poor and those in vulnerable situations and reduce their exposure and vulnerability to climate-related extreme events and other economic, social and environmental shocks and disasters
