Description

The initiative, lasting 36 months, aims to contribute to the extension of Universal Health Coverage in Burkina, thanks to the reduction of transmission and lethality of hepatitis B and C viruses at the Bogodogo hospital, a historic site of Italian health intervention in the country, which serves about 500,000 inhabitants on the outskirts of the capital Ouagadougou. In Burkina, where it is estimated that almost 10% of the population is infected with the B virus and about 3% with the C, national strategies and regulations inspired by WHO guidelines have been adopted in recent years. Important measures are now routinely available and free of charge: i) the anti-B vaccination of all children; ii) hepatitis B screening during prenatal visits, and the administration of antivirals to positive pregnant women; iii) the treatment of hepatitis C. For hepatitis B, treatment is offered at a low price. Access to treatment, however, is conditional on the performance of other tests whose cost remains borne by the patients, for the majority of whom it is inaccessible. In addition, the limited resources available to the Bogodogo hospital do not allow patients with hepatitis to be fully taken care of. Added to this is the lack of knowledge of the population about these diseases and the stigma that still afflicts positives. The proposal aims to strengthen the prevention and treatment capacities of hepatitis B and C infections, in particular for pregnant women, mothers of patients admitted to the pediatric ward and for surgery patients thanks to the support to hospital management in the development and implementation of guidelines, staff training and the strengthening of counseling activities. The supply of reagents, consumables, and instrumentation is also planned. Finally, psychological support activities will be strengthened, in collaboration with local organizations, and community awareness and education activities. read more close
