Description
The initiative is built upon the experiences and lessons learned of the consortium members in the area of intervention in close partnership with the local authorities in the fight against HIV and the vertical transmission and in the reduction of neonatal, and child mortality in the areas of Maputo and Beira. Overall objective of the project is to support health authorities in continuing towards the achievement of the SDGs 3 despite the impact on the Covid-19 pandemic, and more specifically, to reduce the persistently high neonatal mortality rate (28.55 deaths every 1.000 live births) and the high rate of vertical transmission from mother to child that causes on a yearly basis around 16.000 new infections on a yearly basis among children <5 (Spectrum 2018). The project aims to increase quality and utilization of maternal and neonatal healthcare services especially those related to the prevention of mother to child transmission, care for sick newborn and emergency paediatric care in the communities living in Beira (city and district, 562.000 inhabitants) and in Maputo (district of Matola 1.146.996, Maputo city 1.336.499) with a focus on the most vulnerable group. ER.1 Improved quality primary services are available for pregnant women and children exposed to HIV in 5 health centres in the cities of Beira and Maputo and in the province of Maputo. Activities and Tools: adaptation and rehabilitation of 2 health facilities, supply of tools and equipment to support the early diagnosis of HIV and improve the quality of antenatal care; support to clinical activities in the field of prenatal and early childhood primary care, awareness and communication activities and data collection in 5 health centres (2 in Beira and 3 in Maputo city and Matola in the province of Maputo). ER2. Increased access to quality pathological newborn care services at Beira Central Hospital (HCB), at 5 health centres in the city of Beira and at the Mavalane General Hospital (HGM). Activities and tools: support to clinical activities in neonatal intensive care; training of health personnel in neonatal intensive care in Beira (HCB and health centres) and Maputo (General Hospital of Mavalane); community-based awareness of the risks and warning signs in the newborn; support for data collection on newborn care and operational research. ER.3. The clinical and organizational quality of paediatric emergency care in the Beira district and the city of Maputo has been improved. Activities and tools: support to the clinical activities of the health units of the intervention site (paediatric emergency care units at the HCB and HGM); support to the paediatric emergency / urgency reference system in Beira (from health centres to the HCB), community-based awareness of risks and danger signals in children, support for data collection and operational research on emergency paediatric care. Target groups: 157.715 individuals.
