Description

The Country of intervention is Kenya, in the territories of Meru and Tharaka-Nithi Counties. The general objective is to promote sustainable agriculture and food security in the areas of intervention (SDG 2.4). The specific objective is to improve the agricultural productivity of the beneficiaries through agroecology and digital go-to-market practices (SDG 2.3.) The main needs identified underlying the intervention strategy are food insecurity (and consequently malnutrition), insufficient agricultural sustainability (both at the environmental and socio-economic level) and poor digitalization, especially in rural agriculture. First, the strategy envisages the creation and provision of technical training on agroecology (ER1), including theoretical and practical courses, to farmers selected in collaboration with the DSSD. Among the 10,000 envisioned participants, more than 80% will be female farmers, promoting women's empowerment and gender equality. The project's beneficiaries will be supported in employing new technologies and innovative agricultural machinery with the support of the technical partner Nardi. In doing so, farmers will access the agricultural market and trade more effectively (ER2). The involvement of the partner Slow Food will guarantee that all activities are always oriented towards a sustainable supply chain, while the contribution of MLFM will ensure the inclusion of vulnerable categories of the population, especially people with disabilities (ER3). The project further fosters innovation in farmers' communities by employing the digital go-to-market approach, using a multifunctional digital platform, creating the Digital Earth Market and raising digital awareness among the population. Finally, the partners KALRO and Agrion will carry out analyses, reports and research in the field of agroecology and biodiversity to guarantee the scientific validity of the efforts undertaken and encourage the dissemination of policies in the field of sustainable agriculture and reduction of pollution (SDG 3.9). read more close
