Description

The initiative "Maisha Bora: Enterprise, environment, and nutrition for sustainable sevelopment" aims to improve food security in Molo Sub-County, Nakuru County, Kenya, through a multidimensional approach strongly aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 and 6, particularly targets 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, and 6.4. The general objective of the initiative is to enhance the nutritional status of the rural population by promoting the responsible and efficient use of natural resources, improving healthcare services for the prevention and treatment of malnutrition, and developing the local dairy value chain. This multidimensional approach integrates these components based on the understanding that nutrition cannot be improved through a single intervention but requires a holistic strategy involving various aspects of community life. The direct beneficiaries of the initiative are rural communities and small-scale dairy producers in Molo Sub-County, with a particular focus on women and youth to promote gender equity and social inclusion. The intervention is based on a participatory and integrated approach that includes professional training, access to agricultural resources and technologies, and awareness campaigns on nutritional practices. Activities will include capacity building, technical and financial support, and the creation of cooperative networks among farmers and other stakeholders. The project is implemented by a consortium of organizations led by Mani Tese ETS, in collaboration with Medicus Mundi Italia, 3Es, Fondazione Imagine ESG, the University of Turin, and CreSud. The synergy among partners ensures a multidisciplinary and sustainable approach, with a strong commitment to shared management and continuous monitoring of the initiative's progress. The initiative aligns with national and local policies. Ongoing training and support for agricultural and healthcare sector operators are fundamental to the project's success. By developing agriculture and improving farming practices, the project aims to increase agricultural productivity and improve the quality of cultivated products, while reducing the environmental impact of agricultural practices and enhancing food security in the intervention area. Furthermore, the project aims to create a favorable environment for the development of small and medium-sized agricultural enterprises by providing financial and banking training sessions to encourage entrepreneurship and create new job opportunities. The agriculture-health-dairy value chain multidimensional approach creates a virtuous cycle that promotes sustainable rural development, improving access to better nutrition, increasing milk production and quality, and stimulating the local economy. This integrated approach is essential to address the challenges of malnutrition and food insecurity effectively and sustainably in rural communities. read more close
