Description

The Mawarid initiative works in the Governorate of Ben Arous, Tunisia, to address the nexus between sustainable agricultural production, food security and nutrition. Through a set of actions aimed at adapting agriculture to climate change and the increasing scarcity of resources, the project intends to promote the dissemination of sustainable agricultural practices and the reuse of available resources, focusing mainly on purified wastewater and organic waste, as well as supporting agricultural incomes through the marketing of products with high nutritional quality. The main target of the initiative is a group of farmers who will be accompanied in the agroecological transition, with the aim of reducing the environmental impact of their production. In parallel, environmental awareness is expected to have a positive impact on the nutrition of children, especially school children, through the connection between sustainable agricultural production and school canteens. The project stems from the urgent need to intervene on land and water resources, which are suffering from the combined effects of climate crises and the current agricultural production model, characterized by high consumption of water and chemicals. The partnership, led by ARCS with its vast experience in the dissemination of agroecology in the region, involves a number of well-established partners, such as the Regional Commissariat for Agriculture of Ben Arous, the public company ‘è-comune’ of Nuoro (already involved in waste reuse projects in Tunisia) the Tunisian Permaculture Association, the John Paul II Foundation (ARCS's partner in agricultural commercialization projects in other countries), the company Aqa of Mantua (specialized in water resource management), the Municipality of Mantua (for environmental issues, nutrition and organization of services) and Equo Garantito (for commercialization). At the local level, the project takes advantage of the established relationships with the Regional Education Commissariat, the Agricultural Dissemination and Training Agency, the Women's Agricultural Development Groups and the Office National de l'Assainissement, already collaborators of ARCS in past projects. It also involves five municipalities in the region in the creation of organic waste composting units, the agricultural training centre in Ouzra (which will house the agroecological products storage unit) and the Agricultural Training Centre in Chbedda for experimentation. The planned activities aim to improve adaptation to climate change, strengthen the skills of the agricultural sector, protect biodiversity and improve the nutritional quality of products, as well as ensure greater and more sustainable water availability, soil quality, increased incomes and new job opportunities read more close
